sports

Well I just did our reading. the sports taboo was very interesting. i was very surprised how much it made me think about the way sports are played. I never really thought about the different races in sports. like in baseball most of the time there is a white guy pitching and black guys in the out field. why is this i have no idea. but its just the way it is. but you look at a sport like basketball, 80% of the players are black. Yes most black males are taller than white males. this just surprises me that the number that high i would of never thought that 80% of the professional basketball players are black. I didnt agree tho with the whole football view. In my high school we had both a back and white quarterback and running back. our team wasnt set up like that. I dont think professional football is like it as much either. yes there are more white quarterbacks than black but not 80% of quarterbacks are white.

reading 119-124

Why do most people watch TV? Why do most people read a book? Well I know for me I watch TV for entertainment. I don’t like to sit down a read for enjoyment. My parents can sit on the beach and read a whole book in one day. Me I sit down with a magazine and am tired of it in 20 min. TV has entertainment and information all at the same time. I didn’t like how the book only talked about TV shows that are themed like drama and westerns and things like that. There is a lot more out there than just that. There are information shows that are entertaining. One of my favorite show/shows to watch is the Saturday morning Power Block on Spike. The shows are trucks Xtreme 4x4 Horse power TV and Muscle car. By the names you can figure out they are all car shows. I could go all week and probably not watch any other TV shows as long as I got to watch those 4 shows. But the show like Seinfeld and friends are shows that show how the common American is. Most people think that’s how you would live in NY at their age. Im not raciest in anyway but I do hate it when people like Oprah or anyone of a race that seems to think that they are being put down over something. But when Oprah asked why there was no black who the hell cares if there is no black friend. Yeah I have friends that are black, white, blue and purple. It makes no difference to me, but why does something like that always come up. It seems frustrating that something so successful as friends Oprah tries to make it sound like well you need a black person in your show. Now a day it probably wouldn’t matter if the whole show was black people. The race of the actors didn’t make the show. The comedy and the acting and the plot of the show made the show so successful.

First Reading page 1-21

This reading was a little dry but has some interesting points. Something I really liked was in the first section "Semiotics The Study Of Signs". They talked about how people see signs. Well I agree with them. You don't really read that everyday signs. Like stop signs, open, close, ext. We seem to memorize those signs and there just embedded in our brains. We see a closed sign we keep going. But there are some signs we know exactly what they mean but have no idea what they are called. These signs are mostly street signs or road signs. There are these signs around turns that are yellow and have black arrows. Well we all know what they mean but what are they called?? Well for the longest time I didn’t know and it sort of bothered me. Well one day in Drivers ED in high school, a long time ago (4 years). My teacher held up this picture and said if anyone can tell me the name of this sign they will get extra credit, no one knew. So he told us to find out and the next time we had class we would discuss it. Well I know as your reading this it’s just starting to bother you... lol. Well these signs are called chevrons. The reason I’m saying this is because in the book it talked about a blue diamond shaped sign with halt on it. Well they were comparing this to a stop sign. Without thinking we see an octagon that is red and white letters we stop. But if we saw a blue diamond shaped sign we would have to read and think about it for it to sink in. it’s like driving down a curvy road and your passenger going there are chevrons up here around the next turn. The driver is going to be like what the hell are you talking about. When you hear the word chevron a yellow sign with a black arrow doesn’t pop into your head unless you know what it is.

This book does a good job of making your mind wonder in the beginning. They were talked about signifiers. Like soda and pop. My sister lives in NY and up there they say pop and it drives me nut when they come down here and say pop. Down here its soda. It just made me think of real things that happen in life that they are talking about in the book.
